Character Studies

As I always keep myself busy with all kinds of interests, one of such used to be studies about game characters.

The main purpose for this was to get a deeper understanding about human atomy in general as well as practicing different skills such as sculpting and texturing organic objects.

Late Night Sculpting Adventures

These late night studies really began with the fact, I was bored and was waiting for a daily quest ending inside Black Desert Online.

While waiting I head this weird image in my head while watching the first Madagascar movie, of a chad pinguine mixed up with the one and only handsome Thaddäus tentacle. So I searched for reference images and really just sculpted randomly based on the cartoon image.

That beeing done, I questioned myself why certain muscles look the way they did, from that point on, I took one to three hours each day to learn more about face structure, muscles and proportions as well as good starting points to sculp heads in Blender.

Along with the face studies, I took things further and expanded towards the rest of the human body. At the time, I was very into watching a pen and paper done by some Twitch streamers and I thought, I would do a fan art of some sort. I took the base concept they used for there pen and paper sessions and tried to sculp and create a full character model out of it. In fact, I had to do it twice as the first version really just looked weird and another kind of creepy then the original character. The second attempt really got to something much more pleasing but still with lots of visual and proportional flaws.

Keera

This character was created for a project back in 2022 I did as a side thing. This was a year prior to my actual character studies so basically one of my first attempts.

My focus on this character was less about learning anatomy but to learn more about a complete composition and what visual elements can make a character more unique.

For the base, I used a generic female base mesh and deformed it based on my concept sketches.

The core concept was like a humanoid hellhound working at an office. The setting was inspired by the animation series Helluva Boss. The characters clothing style however has been highly influenced by a polish game called Helltaker made by VanRipper.
